Arts Express - Star Wars: The Emperor's Old Clothes

                                           Banksy On Target

First, the disclaimer that no, I am not now nor have I ever been a Star Wars junkie. Which may make for a far less receptive critique in the face of those throngs of worshipful masses in question. But on the other hand, an exceedingly more impartial position viewing a film that should stand on its own merits, and not propped up by a built in fan base. Or for that matter, clearly intimidated critic colleagues who may say one thing publicly, but whisper something quite different off camera. Though which situates any neutrality in the discomforting position of say, an atheist taking to the podium at a church service.

Brandishing both a wand and a wink at audiences and splitting itself in catch-all mode somewhere between colossal and cartoonish, the latest, future ironically as past preaching to the choir Star Wars saga continues with this seventh entry billed as Episode VII - The Force Awakens. And the first financed by Disney.

Embarking as a brand new trilogy, and make no mistake with equal if not more emphasis on brand as in merchandising, The Force Awakens follows as aftermath to Return Of The Jedi. The inter-generational proceedings find Ford's Solo and Carrie Fisher's Leia mixing in with newcomers John Boyega as black intergalactic superhero combat soldier turned whistleblower Finn. And Daisy Ridley's fierce female insurgent Rey, with an obedient robotic boy toy following behind. Along with a hide and seek narrative as second fiddle to the main character centerpiece - war and weaponry - encircling a lost and found plot point quest for Luke Skywalker.

And though slim plot points are dangled before enraptured audiences who essentially need none because just being there is what it's all about, the real main attraction as the farce awakens so to speak, is blowing things up. And in more ways than one, whether the interminable explosions or offscreen blown out of proportion franchise collectibles to come. Or have very likely already arrived.

So what inevitably ensues is less of a focus on all the paradoxical cartoonish carnage and mayhem in progress on screen, than interest in what's up with the popcorn and Kool-Aid ingesting swooning audiences in the theaters. And the strange notion of this breathlessly anticipated theatrical event in a nation traumatized by endless wars in the real world - in a country that even before its founding has been at war for 214 out of the 235 years of existence. And with most in the audience never knowing a time in their own lives without US wars, assaults and invasions around the planet.

So why the massive flocking to theaters to pay for more war and massacre, military slaughter, fear and terror as spectacle - and dare I say, entertainment. Perhaps in bizarre, safe space psychological mode, akin to controlled demolition of buildings - as opposed to say, the helplessly unanticipated public trauma of 9/11.

And war itself, co-starring state of the art weaponry, as the biggest moneymaker for this country enriching both the military industrial complex and Hollywood. Along with the Pentagon's lucrative sideline as the major props department in movies, with inevitable final cut privilege over how they get portrayed.

Okay, my two cents, there it is. And likely the fate that awaits this intrepid critic: Let the haters be with you. Bring it on.

  1. I don't understand why you are comparing Star Wars The Force Awakens to US war and CIE but you are clearly missing the point..

Star Wars is a mythological story about good versus evil and faith reuniting character to face some serious shit or going throught moment of joy and cheer.

No point comparing it to US wars or any of this nonsense... it's just a movie....

    1. I like that you say star wars is a mythological story. Cause yeah that's what it used to be.. This new one has zero mythology in it. Its pew pew and bang bang makes me zzzzzzzzzzzz

      Delete
    2. It was a retelling of the Sword In the Stone. Did you miss that?

      Delete
    3. It's once again a tale about good versus evil, about characters united together by faith to face it and about a quest to find a mythical figure in a 'legend of king arthur' fashion, it's way more mythological than the prequel trilogy....

  2. Instead of a movie review you have an uneducated opinion on the American Psyche? There is nothing wrong with not agreeing with the "mainstream" opinion but please make sure that opinion isn't pointless

  3. Wow, over a Star Wars movie that is nothing other than pure American escapism? Nothing more than the battle between good and evil that began in stories over the campfire. This sounds like typical liberal political correctness looking for any iota of an element of sensitivity in a plot that may brainwash or offend someone. It's just a Star Wars movie sweetheart. Don't hurt yourself trying to think too hard. Now, remind me again what this review has to do with the art of film?

    5. Yeah guys, you know it's wrong to attack someone who just attacked something. Leave the imaginary personal/sexual attacks out of it. Oh wait, no. Don't. It was a crap review by someone who obviously should've waited a few days before seeing the movie, then she might not have such a crummy attitude. Here's to hoping she never praised a "Twilight" film or anything to do with "50 Shades..." lest she be a braying hypocrite, although from the caliber of writing, there is a possibility of such. Wondering what movie WOULD someone of this mentality recommend as a "good" flick, if Star Wars is really that bad. :/

    6. wow....such douche bags. If you don't like this review use your brain and explain why you disagree. Someone's body part has nothing to do with a review of a film.

  7. Clearly an attempt at attention grabbing with this "look at me, I don't like the movie" review. This critic basically tries to make to make the case that she doesn't like Star Wars because there is war and suffering in the real world.

Rotten Tomatoes shouldn't even allow this as a valid review. It's without any real critique of anything about the actual movie itself. She refers to BB-8 as a robotic "boy toy" and John Boyega as a "BLACK" intergalactic superhero combat soldier turned whistle blower." I mean come on really? And btw, what does the actors skin color have to do with anything at all?

She even ends the review with a "bring it on" statement. Rotten Tomatoes is for real movie reviews, not for you to use as your personal anti-United States political soap box. There isn't even one sentence in this review that shows she even saw the movie at all! Not even one. And these kind of reviews should be removed immediately because it's not a real review.

Essentially this review states the following:

The United States sucks, so don't see Star Wars

Politicians suck - so don't see Star Wars

War and Suffering Sucks - So don't see Star Wars

9/11 sucked so don't see Star Wars

The military sucks so don't see Star Wars

Terrorism Sucks so don't see Star Wars

Everything in the entire world and life itself sucks, so don't go see Star Wars.

And even if everything is as bad as she says it it, then that's the perfect reason to actually get away from it all and actually "Go see Star Wars!!"

    2. you obviously just want some negative attention right? The reason you wrote this "review" was simply to make others feel bad. The fact this review exists is a crime in itself. It plainly shows you have sinister intentions and are clearly hiding something. I suggest you sit down with a therapist and communicate all of your transgressions against humanity and cease your senseless attacks on the innocence of this movie. What are you hiding from your readers? You have in fact committed crimes for which you could be thoroughly censored for. So, what is it? cough it up, what are your hidden crimes? Theft? murder? Embezzlement?

  10. This is really bad and uninformative and has nothing to do with the movie. If I ever saw a Tumblrfied movie review this would be it.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I am fine with the critique that much of the thirst for endless war drives some of the hype for star wars... but this is a craving of humanity not just the American public. So is this a movie review or a political opinion? And, if a movie portraying war makes it a bad movie just because war is shown, does that mean all movies portraying war get a bad review from you? Should war never be shown in cinema regadless of the message? I think star wars has always been fairly anti war. (The Star Wars prequels were almost certainly a critique of the war in iraq.) What exactly is wrong with this movie other than its name? The only other critique offered is that it is cartoonish. Cartoonish because of CGI? Because the CGI in this film is much better than any other sci-fi film to date... or do all films with CGI get a thumbs down as well?

  15. i haven't seen the film, but this review is truly terrible

to be clear: its not because your OPINIONS are terrible, but because the REVIEW is terrible

    this is why

    1. you demonstrate no knowledge of the medium of film

    2.your analysis is not balanced

3.you go way too wide with your political framing, with a nonspecific critique that could be applied to just about ANY major blockbuster

    4. You play the victim. Why would you do that? If you mean what you say, then make a good, confident case for it. You KNOW that you didn't, so you just wine and cry.

You should not have reviewed this film, or possibly any film.

    District 9

    The Hangover

Geez, what I got was yet another "angry progressive" masquerading as a cultural savant. Your faux magnanimity inviting "haters" to chime in doesn't validate the cynical origins of your opinion--seriously juvenile and troll-worthy. 19. You're comparing a FANTASY franchise to US wars... How much more boring could you be. This is supposed to be fun. This reminds me of the movie Birdman, where the critics go into a movie/play expecting it to be bad, or just assuming it is, then giving it a bad review. You're just throwing together a punch of big words and political BS to make yourself sound smart, when in reality your review makes no sense. This a movie. A movie is where you go into a universe to engross yourself in a reality in which we do not have in our world, especially in the fantasy genre. The fact that you don't understand that means you should not be a movie critic. Find something else to do.

  20. A few comments:
-"...newcomers John Boyega as black intergalactic superhero combat soldier turned whistleblower Finn." Why do we have to point out that he is black?
-This writing is way too convoluted. There are a lot of impressive adjectives and juxtapositioning, but it is much more effective to just get to the point in the information age.
-Ms. Miller speaks with misanthropic hipster rhetoric. In a world with people who look to a positive future, not sure how this type of writing benefits.

Why not introduce the rest of the cast by their color?
or better yet, Why make a point that he is black at all?

How does explaining his color help the audience to know his character better?
His color has nothing to do with who and what is in the movie, Other than being a fine actor and incredibly entertaining to witness his color is of Zero relevance.
Also, you misused the word whistle blower. I believe you meant Defector.

  25. Leave it to an already sub-par movie critic to totally lose track of the point of reviewing the movie. Your point is that we shouldn't enjoy a movie because there is suffering and violence in the world. Have you ever even watched another US movie? Even the Lion King and Aladdin had violence, should we not watch those movies too? Your review reads like a high schooler who just figured out what a thesaurus is for. Just because you string together big words, doesn't mean you have made a point. Here I came looking for a review, and instead i get the ramblings of someone who is desperately trying to make a point that doesn't even need to be made.

  26. I just found the standard of English in this review really poor. It's an art indeed to make difficult reading of a simple subject. Less time spent trying to dazzle with incoherent superfluous drabble, and more time devoted to an actual review would be great. That said I would agree that the film itself is relatively disappointing but probably inevitable given the hype and expectation surrounding it.

The SINGLE most telling piece of amateur journalism that will fail you out of a journalism class or an interview at a real publication is to start the story by talking about yourself.

"First, the disclaimer that no, I am not now nor have I ever been a Star Wars junkie."

  31. Besides the bad writing that was a pseudo-intellectual pile of garbage, you clearly missed the point. People are allowed to have fun you know and you gave no valid reason as why you though it was bad. Just saying, people usually hate on things meant to bring people joy because they despondent. Guess what, people like these movies because they are visually an adventure to watch, and it's about hope; the good guys are fight back at impossible odds and they win. I think that's an important frame of mind when it comes to thinking about war in the real world. You would know that if you studied media at all.

Also, don't end with "Let the Haters be with you. Bring it on," if you're going to fight back with childish replies to comments, it's classless.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Why do you expressly identify Fin as black when the movie does not have any racial themes?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Regarding this review: um... what? I don't get it. Did you mean to express an opinion? With writing? If so, you may want to consider revising. And possibly taking a writing class that focuses on critical thinking skills.

All I took away was that you think fictional films containing warfare are bad when there is real war in the real world. Which I suppose is fine as an opinion about movies in general, but not really a valid critique of THIS FILM.

    1. Exactly. So because of the wars in this world, this movie is a poorly directed, written, and acted film? No! That makes no sense. Just some rambling about how real wars need to be paid attention to instead of this movie.

Having said that, I had a difficult time understanding what your complaints about the actual film were. You complained about the merchandising, the fan base, and the fact that real war is bad. You said that the film felt cartoonish and paradoxical and maybe I could see what you meant if you could explain why. I get the impression that your dissatisfaction has more to do with things outside of he film than the film itself.

If I have to reread a sentence 3 times to understand what you're trying to say, you failed. Trying to sound smart while writing a review in less then 5 minutes will end badly for you. Second of all your 'review', if you want to call it that, is about America not the movie. You also probably don't like sifi in general so for you to think your an unbiased writer is mistaken. If you were trying to write unbiasedly you could have talked about the writing of the script, or the plot elements, or character arcs, but you chose to talk politics....... But the author just goes off on a massive rant about why we should feel bad about watching a movie about a war whilst there are actual wars happening in the world. 53. Why the need to treat Star Wars fans as blathering idiots who bought into a national craze for endless war? It just seems too convenient for your argument, and insults many in the community who are bright, independent thinking people, that just enjoy the ride that is Star Wars. Yes, there will be war...This is Star WARS after all. Being critical of the fantasy violence is simply not fair. It would be like being critical of Titanic because in the end it sinks.

Movies need to be reviewed in their own context. Yes, you didn't like the movie. I can respect that. What I can not respect is the reasons given for not liking the movie. Such as "So what inevitably ensues is less of a focus on all the paradoxical cartoonish carnage and mayhem in progress on screen, than interest in what's up with the popcorn and Kool-Aid ingesting swooning audiences in the theaters." Sure, the movie is full of fan service. That's a valid criticism I can understand. I don't agree with it, but I understand it far better than personally attacking the fans of the movie. What really gets me is the feeling of venomous hate that comes across in the review. As if it's your right to spew such hateful garbage at the fans of the movie, but you just believe the responses will be "haters." I believe you read the comments here, because I've seen your responses to some of them, but the seething spite is just so passive aggressive for the sake of nothing. For someone who seems so anti-conflict, why bring it on? Is it the feeling of purpose, or just so people notice you? It's not your opinion that bothers so many of your readers, but the way you presented it while providing little in the way of evidence. I feel a little sorry for you, but for me I still have a childlike spirit in me that craves Star Wars. Does that mean I drank the "Kool-Aid?" Maybe, but at least I'm happier for it.

Unfortunately reading yours was a complete waste of time. Did it ever occur to you that many Star Wars fans disagree with US polices and actions, and that seeing Star Wars is a momentary escape from perpetual helplessness? If you're going to write a movie review, review the movie. Not the people seeing it.

    ReplyDelete
  61. This was a bad review on the grounds that any review that fails to review the film in question is a bad review.

    ReplyDelete
  62. You didn't watch the movie. As an avid Star Wars fan I had obvious issues with the film and it deserves criticism as does all film, but your review isn't for the movie it's a soap box for your personal commentary on war in general. You're reviewing the title, not the movie.

  63. Somebody was trying to get attention. Stupid bitch.

  64. Mixing political commentary with starwars is ballsy! Respect for that, and I think you make a revealing point about our obsession with war. Maybe we want to believe in a "good war" to help us ignore obvious U.S. war crimes and the tenuous line between terrorism and fighting terrorism.

And yes the merch is off the handle, no question.

But these ideas don't define the movie, and at least for me in star wars is a beautiful, fun, engaging story set in a completely exciting and awe inspiring universe. Laser swords and space ship battles!

    1. I would agree with "ballsy", if there was any relevance (perhaps in the 1st 2 prequels, this could've provided the perfect opportunity to abuse "hashtag Star Wars" to garner hits/views, but not here). It shows how much a person feels a need for attention when they reach THIS far to equate ANYTHING in a space-western movie to real life. I have no respect for people who are too superior to let themselves actually have fun because of some warped elitist hipster principle.

  65. i haven't seen the film, but this review is truly terrible

to be clear: its not because your OPINIONS are terrible, but because the REVIEW is terrible

    this is why

    1. you demonstrate no knowledge of the medium of film

The whole point of blogs like this is to misrepresent films for shock value and take a contrarian point of view.

This isn't journalism for films any more than IGN praise for video games that are bad is game journalism.

  72. This is horrid writing, just horrid. With the entirely gratuitous and inept usage of 'boy toy' and the arrogant disdain towards readers (who are potentially viewers) through phrases such as "the popcorn and Kool-Aid ingesting swooning audiences in the theaters", the author is attempting to riff on Christopher Hitchens and announce to readers that She Is Clever. Masturbatory; no better word to describe this.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Contrarian is my take; a writer who seems to think she's smarter than the rest of us.

It's OK not to like Star Wars. It really is. But give me a reason. Was the plot too similar to the original film and Return of the Jedi? Did the dialogue suck? Was it a little too convenient that the film's heroes all wound up in the same place at the same time in a galaxy far, far away? Did "mastering" the Force come to easily to certain characters? Did the movie fail to answer basic questions?

It's fine that Stars Wars doesn't speak to you like it did to millions in my generation. Cool. The Force Awakens isn't a perfect movie. But it was fun, and rekindled the magic so many of us remember from our childhoods and are passing down to the next generation.

It's escapism. And I think you overthought this review.

Like many commenting, I can't actually tell if you saw the movie. Did you? To me it appears this might have been written ahead of time, to get an unrelated political doctrine out to the masses, riding Star Wars' and Rotten Tomatoes' enormous cosmic tails.

Then again, if Charles Rumshas is correct, this is par for the course with your reviews -- the more loved they are with other critics, the less likely you are to applaud.

To readers looking for critical thought, this isn't the reviewer you were looking for. You can go about your business.

It's even OK to say occasionally that beloved pop culture emperors have no clothes, even just for the sake of being provocative. Pauline Kael did that all the time. But Pauline Kael knew films, and she knew how to write. You, Ms Miller, are no Pauline Kael. Stop pretending to be.

Also loved the natural environments, not that cgi generated garbage they used in the prequels.    And best of all, no jar jar binks; It would have been a nice touch if this movie took a couple of minutes to explain the gruesome death he might had some time after episode iii, but that would be asking too much.

The death star can consume the energy of real star, but they cannot be bothered to put some security devices at the doors, like alarms and cameras? . ).       It took yoda training for Luke to first face off darth vader, and losing badly, while here, a girl with absolutely no experience and guide, learns to control the force and DEFEAT the emo-antagonist, without any formal training.

But he could have been anything, like the leader of a commercial interstellar conglomerate or something, that does cargo jobs for fun. But no, he still owes money to some random guys. I guess theres no social security in star wars either.
    > Also,  In episode III (actually vi, but i am going to pretend from here on that the prequels never existed, except for when yoda Fights palpatine and anakin turns bad and kills everyone including the padawans, which is totally incorrect but makes a very strong statement)  luke tells leía that the force runs in the family, so you would expect that leía turned into a mystic princess-general that could actually use some force, instead, we see her as a schoolgirl that still got the hots for mr Solo,  and although i dont blame her because he is still the coolest guy in the universe, i expected more from her. (How about instead of digitally erasing them, her wrinkles appeared due to the use Of the force? A la palpatine)
    >
    > And if you are the undisputed coolest guy in the universe, why not die like one?  How about that they tried to destroy the new death star like in the previous movies, but instead of repeating the same old thing, they actually failed... "Hey, they finally solved the death star security problem!"   and then someone comes up with and idea like "how about striking It with an object that travels at the speed of light"... From here on the possibilities are endless.  I would go for the easy way and pull off an armaggedon, and have Han trap everyone in an escape pod including chewie... And then....

    >
    > They come up with the idea to destroy the death star with a fast object, and the new crew is together with han in a mother ship.  They walk together discussing, and without anyone noticing, han stops.    You see the guys looking back at han.   You see han looking at them, while he closes the door, locking them and keeping them from doing anything stupid.  You see him saying goodbye to chewie, and thanking him for all his time and his friendship.  You see him telling him the crew that they must Live.
    >
    > Then he cooly goes to the millenium falcon and sets everything up including the warpdrive... His last lines would be " at last. I am. Alone" (see what i did there with his last name?") While crashing the millenium falcon at superluminal speeed into the death star...
    >
    > Quite melodramátic. But if han solo is going to die, he deserves nothing but the most espectacular Of deaths, while saving the entire Galaxy in the process.   Of course for all this to work, the fight between rei and renlo or whatever his name is, would have to be different, as in, never actually happening, and some other minor changes.

This would only enhace the importance Of Luke, because eventhough his part was good enough, it was like "ok girl, you found me. But it just happens you áre already a total badass, you are the second prettiest face in the star wars universe after amidala and CAN use the force and already beated the villian's ass... What CAN i possibly teach you?"

  94. Excellent review! I haven't seen the movie yet but I was worried when I saw JJ Abrahms was making this movie because of my strong dislike of "Star Trek: Into Darkness".

There was no depth to the movie. With visuals that felt like an exploitation of 9/11 attacks, one dimensional female characters and special effects to the point where it was a distraction.

I am grateful for the Iconoclasm of this review. It should not be taboo to use our mythologies to make understandings of the world around us. That to me is a sign of cognitive dissonance and society on the brink of another major war.

I sought out a dissenting view before watching the movie to help give me some perspective of what I am about to go see.

I found an intelligent review that resonates with my previous experience.

Her review also resonates with what I see happening to hollywood in a larger context.

The responses I have read to this article have mostly attacked the author rather than the substance of what she is saying.

If they mention what is in the article it never elaborates on as to why she is wrong.

That to me is an indication that the responses are very emotional. Which means she hit a nerve that resonated with people.

I wrote to fast in my first response. What I meant to emphasize is that I will most likely enjoy this movie. I want to. It will be easier for me to with the expectation of having to deal with the problems in the movie that this review articulated.

  95. Being contrarian only works when one's sufficiently knowledgeable about the source material. You clearly lack the requisite understanding, and hence do not merit the wrath of anyone, especially not "haters". Who, BTW, would have to be characterised as equally lacking understanding, and maybe misery loves company... Hell, I dunno. Just guessing here. For the record, I gave TFA 7/10. I consider it a missed opportunity, a compelling story awkwardly told and bungled by bad editing from a dramaturgical and narrative perspective. Cannot rush a story like this. It loses its impact, which it did. So we're left with the pew-pew bang-bang (as someone else has put it). Too bad. Still, the potential is there for a superior Ep. VIII.

  100. The author of this review claims to be judging the film solely on its own merit, then slams the movie based on unrelated political issues of her own passion. The review isn't playing by its own rules (Kudos on taking a brave stance, yet I don't know why it's brave).

Unfortunately she's right about the movie. This was a highly polished yet uninteresting story, amateurishly acted with obligatory casting and some gawdawful pandering. If Star Wars is a drug, we are taking it because of the addiction, not the thrill.

Thankfully the narcissistic hipster faction who already had made their minds up about the movie prior to even seeing it (like the author of this purported "review" evidently belongs to) only make up a fraction of a percentage of the population. Meanwhile, those of us who exist in reality and enjoy a fun story and have passion for things outside of anti-trending have spoken loud and clear in terms of turn-out AND positive reviews. This was an opportunistic swipe at "causes" and politics which were irrelevant to the movie. It was a way to name-drop "hashtag Star Wars" to get hits/visits and to polarize as an ego boost. Even looking at 'VII' as pure entertainment, which is its intended main goal, it falls flat. Being the lowest common denominator of mediocrity is simply a wasteful loss considering the resources spent.
There is of course the chance for the sequel to pick up the shards and plot holes and amaze us with original ideas, unexpected twists, developing characters, a story that transitions the old saga into the new age, a film that does the talking, not the characters explaining the film, thank you very much. The mystical Force hums and resonates through Jedi and Siths alike, revealing more of its true nature, only a little tease, showing some grey between light and dark.

  115. Quite simply, its a rehash of episode IV. Nothing new and blah at times. The only newish things are Rey doing Jedi mind tricks and other Jedi things when she's had zero training, with the exception of closing her eyes and taking a deep breath, a boring light saber battle between her and Kylo Ren, Kylo having major temper tantrums and destroying machines when he doesn't get his way. Was basically a cash grab. Yeah people wanna see Star Wars, and they wanna see all the cool things in it, but why re-hash A New Hope? Story is essential and could have been way better.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Well, honestly - the fact that you are creating a critique with the sole purpose of drawing attention and 'haters' as you so put it, says all I need to know about your article. An attention grab. Look, I get it. Your not a fan. What gets me is your generation of reviewers - intentionally driving people to read an article or review with the singular purpose of drawing interest based off a skewed negative take on the film. You state the obvious, congratulations. If you want to say the movie was neither informative or original, and was a money or attention grab then congratulations - you have more in common with the movie than you think. Next time, write an article based on all of your own opinions, not just the ones you intend to draw 'hated' attention. It will sound a lot less like rubbish.

Thank you for saying what hundreds of reviewers are thinking but dare not say: the emperor has no clothes.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Main problem is not the author's obvious dislike for TFA. The problem is she totally fails to explain why. Like:

    1. No original story, entire plot borrowed from the original trilogy

    2. Pretty much no character development at all. The good as well as the bad guys do some crazy stuff but you don't even know why. Finn for instance is supposed to be a stormtrooper from birth. Why would he suddenly defect despite all that brain washing?

3.Kylo Ren is a miscast or simplt badly
written. Once he puts off his mask, he is nothing more but an insecure, confused kid.

    4. The plot is extremely implausible throughout. Like, how does some completely untrained person stand even a nuance of a chance against a seasoned dark side wielder? How can someone all of a sudden master the force without any training whatsoever by simply taking a deep breath?
How can someone spend unimaginable resources to build a planet sized weapon but totally fails to install even the most basic security measures, so that a small random team can easily undo its critical elements?

And so on and so on

    ReplyDelete
  126. 100% agree. I am shocked that this terribly unimaginative flagrant retread of the original is getting the positive reviews it's getting. The first 1/3 is a boring "capture the flag" to-do involving a piece of a map is straight out of an old MGM Tom and Jerry cartoon. Oh no! "The resistance" (rolls eyes) blowed up ANOTHER death star! Quick! Build another! And try to make that area of vulnerability a little smaller this time! This film is --horrible--. Don't be afraid to say it. And here's the problem? The story was told after the first three, expertly so. 1977-1983. FIN. Sorry. Everything they do from here will be Godfather III-esque.

    ReplyDelete
