Banksy On Target
First, the disclaimer that no, I am not now nor have I
ever been a Star Wars junkie. Which may make for a far less receptive
critique in the face of those throngs of worshipful masses in question.
But on the other hand, an exceedingly more impartial position viewing a
film that should stand on its own merits, and not propped up by a built
in fan base. Or for that matter, clearly intimidated critic colleagues
who may say one thing publicly, but whisper something quite different
off camera. Though which situates any neutrality in the discomforting
position of say, an atheist taking to the podium at a church service.
Brandishing
both a wand and a wink at audiences and splitting itself in catch-all
mode somewhere between colossal and cartoonish, the latest, future
ironically as past preaching to the choir Star Wars saga continues with
this seventh entry billed as Episode VII - The Force Awakens. And the
first financed by Disney.
Embarking as a brand new
trilogy, and make no mistake with equal if not more emphasis on brand as
in merchandising, The Force Awakens follows as aftermath to Return Of
The Jedi. The inter-generational proceedings find Ford's Solo and Carrie
Fisher's Leia mixing in with newcomers John Boyega as black
intergalactic superhero combat soldier turned whistleblower Finn. And
Daisy Ridley's fierce female insurgent Rey, with an obedient robotic boy
toy following behind. Along with a hide and seek narrative as second
fiddle to the main character centerpiece - war and weaponry - encircling
a lost and found plot point quest for Luke Skywalker.
And
though slim plot points are dangled before enraptured audiences who
essentially need none because just being there is what it's all about,
the real main attraction as the farce awakens so to speak, is blowing
things up. And in more ways than one, whether the interminable
explosions or offscreen blown out of proportion franchise collectibles
to come. Or have very likely already arrived.
So what
inevitably ensues is less of a focus on all the paradoxical cartoonish
carnage and mayhem in progress on screen, than interest in what's up
with the popcorn and Kool-Aid ingesting swooning audiences in the
theaters. And the strange notion of this breathlessly anticipated
theatrical event in a nation traumatized by endless wars in the real
world - in a country that even before its founding has been at war for
214 out of the 235 years of existence. And with most in the audience
never knowing a time in their own lives without US wars, assaults and
invasions around the planet.
So why the massive
flocking to theaters to pay for more war and massacre, military
slaughter, fear and terror as spectacle - and dare I say, entertainment.
Perhaps in bizarre, safe space psychological mode, akin to controlled
demolition of buildings - as opposed to say, the helplessly
unanticipated public trauma of 9/11.
And war itself,
co-starring state of the art weaponry, as the biggest moneymaker for
this country enriching both the military industrial complex and
Hollywood. Along with the Pentagon's lucrative sideline as the major
props department in movies, with inevitable final cut privilege over how
they get portrayed.
Okay, my two cents, there it is. And likely the fate that awaits this intrepid critic: Let the haters be with you. Bring it on.

*George Lucas Thumbs Down Review Of The Force Awakens - But He Won't Be Told Like Me, That His Vagina Hurts
The Dark Side Of George Lucas' $4bn Star Wars Sale: Filmmaker Compares Disney To 'White Slavers'...
I don't understand why you are comparing Star Wars The Force Awakens to US war and CIE but you are clearly missing the point..
ReplyDeleteStar Wars is a mythological story about good versus evil and faith reuniting character to face some serious shit or going throught moment of joy and cheer.
No point comparing it to US wars or any of this nonsense... it's just a movie....
I like that you say star wars is a mythological story. Cause yeah that's what it used to be.. This new one has zero mythology in it. Its pew pew and bang bang makes me zzzzzzzzzzzz
DeleteIt was a retelling of the Sword In the Stone. Did you miss that?
DeleteIt's once again a tale about good versus evil, about characters united together by faith to face it and about a quest to find a mythical figure in a 'legend of king arthur' fashion, it's way more mythological than the prequel trilogy....
DeleteStupid review! Internet sucks for that. Too many stupid people like you who think they have something to say but don't know anything about anything.
DeleteBlame the 3d. It takes some peopld out of the movie too much to actually enjoy the ride. I dont remember but one scene in ANH that explained shit about what was going on outside of millennium falcon.
DeleteBlame the 3d. It takes some peopld out of the movie too much to actually enjoy the ride. I dont remember but one scene in ANH that explained shit about what was going on outside of millennium falcon.
DeleteInstead of a movie review you have an uneducated opinion on the American Psyche? There is nothing wrong with not agreeing with the "mainstream" opinion but please make sure that opinion isn't pointless
ReplyDeleteYou clearly don't like fun.
ReplyDelete"unknown" what???
DeleteWow, over a Star Wars movie that is nothing other than pure American escapism? Nothing more than the battle between good and evil that began in stories over the campfire. This sounds like typical liberal political correctness looking for any iota of an element of sensitivity in a plot that may brainwash or offend someone. It's just a Star Wars movie sweetheart. Don't hurt yourself trying to think too hard. Now, remind me again what this review has to do with the art of film?
ReplyDeleteThis has nothing to do with liberals. I am a liberal and love Star Wars!
DeleteI'm sorry, I thought I was going to read a film review and not a commentary on American history. Bring on the haters? What's to hate? Anti-war myself, I'm not going to argue with your pacifism. I wanted to see your opinion on a film. Bizarre.
ReplyDeletedon't worry guys its just a troll given too much movie critiquing rights. And yes as she stated "my two cents" is what it is: a worthless, blind, narrow sighted review purely meant to enrage others.
ReplyDeleteI think her vagina hurts.
ReplyDeleteHow could it hurt? It's clearly never been touched.
DeleteHoly crap where is the like button!!!!
DeleteYou're a pair of louts, leave the personal/sexual attacks out of it. She's got a point, disagree with that instead.
DeleteWhat point!??!? I don't see a point in this whole article... I mean rant it's an insult to writers to call this an article. The kicker? I hate star wars.
DeleteYeah guys, you know it's wrong to attack someone who just attacked something. Leave the imaginary personal/sexual attacks out of it. Oh wait, no. Don't. It was a crap review by someone who obviously should've waited a few days before seeing the movie, then she might not have such a crummy attitude. Here's to hoping she never praised a "Twilight" film or anything to do with "50 Shades..." lest she be a braying hypocrite, although from the caliber of writing, there is a possibility of such. Wondering what movie WOULD someone of this mentality recommend as a "good" flick, if Star Wars is really that bad. :/
Deletewow....such douche bags. If you don't like this review use your brain and explain why you disagree. Someone's body part has nothing to do with a review of a film.
DeleteClearly an attempt at attention grabbing with this "look at me, I don't like the movie" review. This critic basically tries to make to make the case that she doesn't like Star Wars because there is war and suffering in the real world.
ReplyDeleteRotten Tomatoes shouldn't even allow this as a valid review. It's without any real critique of anything about the actual movie itself. She refers to BB-8 as a robotic "boy toy" and John Boyega as a "BLACK" intergalactic superhero combat soldier turned whistle blower." I mean come on really? And btw, what does the actors skin color have to do with anything at all?
She even ends the review with a "bring it on" statement. Rotten Tomatoes is for real movie reviews, not for you to use as your personal anti-United States political soap box. There isn't even one sentence in this review that shows she even saw the movie at all! Not even one. And these kind of reviews should be removed immediately because it's not a real review.
Essentially this review states the following:
The United States sucks, so don't see Star Wars
Politicians suck - so don't see Star Wars
War and Suffering Sucks - So don't see Star Wars
9/11 sucked so don't see Star Wars
The military sucks so don't see Star Wars
Terrorism Sucks so don't see Star Wars
Everything in the entire world and life itself sucks, so don't go see Star Wars.
And even if everything is as bad as she says it it, then that's the perfect reason to actually get away from it all and actually "Go see Star Wars!!"
Don't forget that 9/11 was an inside job as well!*
Delete*referring, of course, to that 'controlled demolition' comment
AMEN, Charles.
DeleteThe author - a young, insecure and inexperienced critic - clearly wants some attention ... it's simple as that.
ReplyDelete"Bring on the haters" ... what kind of review is this?
You're a moron.
ReplyDelete& that was "all she wrote"
DeleteWell, this may be the most useless review I've seen yet of The Force Awakens. Glad it took less than a minute to read.
ReplyDeleteSame could be said about your comment.
Deleteyou obviously just want some negative attention right? The reason you wrote this "review" was simply to make others feel bad. The fact this review exists is a crime in itself. It plainly shows you have sinister intentions and are clearly hiding something. I suggest you sit down with a therapist and communicate all of your transgressions against humanity and cease your senseless attacks on the innocence of this movie. What are you hiding from your readers? You have in fact committed crimes for which you could be thoroughly censored for. So, what is it? cough it up, what are your hidden crimes? Theft? murder? Embezzlement?
DeleteThis is really bad and uninformative and has nothing to do with the movie. If I ever saw a Tumblrfied movie review this would be it.
ReplyDeleteI am fine with the critique that much of the thirst for endless war drives some of the hype for star wars... but this is a craving of humanity not just the American public. So is this a movie review or a political opinion? And, if a movie portraying war makes it a bad movie just because war is shown, does that mean all movies portraying war get a bad review from you? Should war never be shown in cinema regadless of the message? I think star wars has always been fairly anti war. (The Star Wars prequels were almost certainly a critique of the war in iraq.) What exactly is wrong with this movie other than its name? The only other critique offered is that it is cartoonish. Cartoonish because of CGI? Because the CGI in this film is much better than any other sci-fi film to date... or do all films with CGI get a thumbs down as well?
ReplyDeleteGreat review. Thanks for stating what you did.
ReplyDeleteThank you!!

ReplyDeleteThere may be an attempt at making a point here, but about halfway through the third paragraph of this review I got fed up with the atrocious punctuation and stopped reading. Sorry, Prairie, but you need a better copyeditor.
ReplyDeleteSame here. Run-on sentence much?
DeleteSame here. Run-on sentence much?
Deletei haven't seen the film, but this review is truly terrible
ReplyDeleteto be clear: its not because your OPINIONS are terrible, but because the REVIEW is terrible
this is why
1. you demonstrate no knowledge of the medium of film
2.your analysis is not balanced
3.you go way too wide with your political framing, with a nonspecific critique that could be applied to just about ANY major blockbuster
4. You play the victim. Why would you do that? If you mean what you say, then make a good, confident case for it. You KNOW that you didn't, so you just wine and cry.
You should not have reviewed this film, or possibly any film.
Oh, no! Prairie Miller has been thinking. Call the thought police! Draw your light sabers!
ReplyDeleteList of some other Certified Fresh Movies this critic has given a rotten review to over the last 10 years:
ReplyDeleteInception
Precious
The Hurt Locker 98% (this movie also won Oscars for Best Picture, Director, Screenplay and many more)-Come on really?
District 9
The Hangover
Iron Man
There will be Blood
Atonement
Rescue Dawn
Batman Begins
And many many more.
She just takes the opposite opinion of mainstream for attention. She's one of those. A worthless reviewer.
I simply wanted to read an honest and insightful contrary opinion regarding the cinematic values of SW-TFA. Geez, what I got was yet another "angry progressive" masquerading as a cultural savant. Your faux magnanimity inviting "haters" to chime in doesn't validate the cynical origins of your opinion--seriously juvenile and troll-worthy. "May the condescending arrogance NOT be with you--always!"

DeleteYou're comparing a FANTASY franchise to US wars... How much more boring could you be. This is supposed to be fun. This reminds me of the movie Birdman, where the critics go into a movie/play expecting it to be bad, or just assuming it is, then giving it a bad review. You're just throwing together a punch of big words and political BS to make yourself sound smart, when in reality your review makes no sense. This a movie. A movie is where you go into a universe to engross yourself in a reality in which we do not have in our world, especially in the fantasy genre. The fact that you don't understand that means you should not be a movie critic. Find something else to do.
ReplyDeleteA few comments:
ReplyDelete-"...newcomers John Boyega as black intergalactic superhero combat soldier turned whistleblower Finn." Why do we have to point out that he is black?
-This writing is way too convoluted. There are a lot of impressive adjectives and juxtapositioning, but it is much more effective to just get to the point in the information age.
-Ms. Miller speaks with misanthropic hipster rhetoric. In a world with people who look to a positive future, not sure how this type of writing benefits.
My 2 cents!!
Yes! I was writing the same thing at the same time!
Delete"newcomers John Boyega as black intergalactic superhero combat soldier turned whistleblower Finn".
ReplyDeleteWhy not introduce the rest of the cast by their color?
or better yet, Why make a point that he is black at all?
How does explaining his color help the audience to know his character better?
His color has nothing to do with who and what is in the movie, Other than being a fine actor and incredibly entertaining to witness his color is of Zero relevance.
Also, you misused the word whistle blower. I believe you meant Defector.
pretty sure the word "superhero" is misused as well, unless it means he's a Jedi (in which case thanks for the spoiler?)
Delete"whistle blower" is more topical and therefor serves her bullshit political agenda in this review far better. It doesn't matter if it makes any sense.
Delete"...clearly intimidated critic colleagues who may say one thing publicly, but whisper something quite different off camera." Just because 95% of other critics disagree with you makes them sheep who are afraid to give their true opinion? What? Are you high on something? Your review is insane, it doesn't make a bit of sense. What is Disney going to chase down critics who give their movie a bad review and torture them? Your review is a pathetic joke. I didn't learn one thing about the movie in your review. Just you rambled on about war and other nonsense that had nothing to do with Star Wars. You need to find a different job, you are a horrible movie critic. I don't care if you like Star Wars or not, just give me a sensible explanation that supports your argument.

ReplyDeleteDamn I couldn't agree more
DeleteClearly using all those big words in the hopes that it'll confuse people into thinking you're actually saying something intelligent under all that. Your jedi mind tricks will not work here.
ReplyDeleteLeave it to an already sub-par movie critic to totally lose track of the point of reviewing the movie. Your point is that we shouldn't enjoy a movie because there is suffering and violence in the world. Have you ever even watched another US movie? Even the Lion King and Aladdin had violence, should we not watch those movies too? Your review reads like a high schooler who just figured out what a thesaurus is for. Just because you string together big words, doesn't mean you have made a point. Here I came looking for a review, and instead i get the ramblings of someone who is desperately trying to make a point that doesn't even need to be made.
ReplyDeleteI just found the standard of English in this review really poor. It's an art indeed to make difficult reading of a simple subject. Less time spent trying to dazzle with incoherent superfluous drabble, and more time devoted to an actual review would be great. That said I would agree that the film itself is relatively disappointing but probably inevitable given the hype and expectation surrounding it.
ReplyDeleteI used to be a reviewer until I realized my self-righteous, sanctimoneous more-informed-than-thou opinion wasn't worth a bit more than anybody else's.
ReplyDeleteThe SINGLE most telling piece of amateur journalism that will fail you out of a journalism class or an interview at a real publication is to start the story by talking about yourself.
"First, the disclaimer that no, I am not now nor have I ever been a Star Wars junkie."
Nobody gives a damn about you. I'm just here to make you feel bad. Put your opinion in one hand, a pile of s--t in the other, and what do you have? This is an amateur-caliber review at best.
You are absolutely correct.
DeleteI liked that she identified that in the beginning. I've never seen any of the Star Wars movies and I feel as though he saying that assures me that she is not a super fan. I don't want to read reviews from critics who have always loved star wars as they come at it from a different perspective than someone like myself who has never seen a single one.

ReplyDeleteEven in a galaxy fa, far away we have people wondering why you felt the need to obsess over Boyega's colour.
ReplyDeleteSome people have forgotten that we share the water fountain now.
You're wierd, Chicky. Wasn't this supposed to be movie review? Did you actually see the movie or not? I can't tell.
ReplyDeleteBesides the bad writing that was a pseudo-intellectual pile of garbage, you clearly missed the point. People are allowed to have fun you know and you gave no valid reason as why you though it was bad. Just saying, people usually hate on things meant to bring people joy because they despondent. Guess what, people like these movies because they are visually an adventure to watch, and it's about hope; the good guys are fight back at impossible odds and they win. I think that's an important frame of mind when it comes to thinking about war in the real world. You would know that if you studied media at all.
ReplyDeleteAlso, don't end with "Let the Haters be with you. Bring it on," if you're going to fight back with childish replies to comments, it's classless.
Why do you expressly identify Fin as black when the movie does not have any racial themes?
ReplyDeleteRegarding this review: um... what? I don't get it. Did you mean to express an opinion? With writing? If so, you may want to consider revising. And possibly taking a writing class that focuses on critical thinking skills.
ReplyDeleteAll I took away was that you think fictional films containing warfare are bad when there is real war in the real world. Which I suppose is fine as an opinion about movies in general, but not really a valid critique of THIS FILM.
Exactly. So because of the wars in this world, this movie is a poorly directed, written, and acted film? No! That makes no sense. That's why this review is shit, because it doesn't focus on Star Wars: The a Force Awakens objectively OR subjectively as a film. Just some rambling about how real wars need to be paid attention to instead of this movie.
DeleteI googled this reviewer and read some of their other reviews. One question. How does a critic with such obviously mediocre writing skills gain so much exposure and success?
ReplyDeletePoor grammar you use. Strong with you is the poorly punctuated side of the force.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteThe snark is strong with this one!
Delete(the entirely-called-for snark)
Poor grammar you use. Strong with you is the poorly punctuated side of the force.
ReplyDeleteShe's joking guys and just wants to troll, obviously writing real reviews hasn't worked for her joke of a career.
ReplyDeleteI won't fault you for forming your own opinion even in the face of all of the criticism you'll get for it. Having said that, I had a difficult time understanding what your complaints about the actual film were. You complained about the merchandising, the fan base, and the fact that real war is bad. You said that the film felt cartoonish and paradoxical and maybe I could see what you meant if you could explain why. I get the impression that your dissatisfaction has more to do with things outside of he film than the film itself.
ReplyDeleteI guess you needed to get attention some how......Who are you?
ReplyDeleteThis was probably the worst thing I've ever read. Not just worst review. You're sentence craft is attrocious. If I have to reread a sentence 3 times to understand what you're trying to say, you failed. Trying to sound smart while writing a review in less then 5 minutes will end badly for you. Second of all your 'review', if you want to call it that, is about America not the movie. You also probably don't like sifi in general so for you to think your an unbiased writer is mistaken. If you were trying to write unbiasedly you could have talked about the writing of the script, or the plot elements, or character arcs, but you chose to talk politics....... Congratulations on your amazing career as a movie critic and 'getting the word out', everyone knows your an idiot now.
ReplyDeleteP.S. you LITERALLY asked for this.
You are simply using a movie critics position to preach anti-war rhetoric and its not even original rhetoric. War is terrible and has a great cost. Please let us enjoy our escape from that terrible reality by shutting your trap. Go make a sign about war and stand on the sidewalk. And just for the record, i prefer Star Trek
ReplyDeleteSo, your main reason to dislike this new Star Wars movie, is because their is War in it. Then I advise you not to see the Lord of the Rings trilogy, because there may be Rings in it.
ReplyDeleteThere is only One Ring.
DeleteThat is a thoughtful and provocative review. And judging from the comments, apparently a brave one, though it shouldn't have to be. I don't agree with everything you said, but it is an original and interesting perspective, and I am glad you added it to the mix. I was a bit disappointed by the film myself (I think J.J. Abrams can do much better), but not for the reasons you list, save one related reason: relies too much on fight scenes, and not enough on character development.
ReplyDeleteThank you!!
DeleteThe thing is, you've already provided more information about what is wrong with the film in your final sentence, than this author did in her entire review. I enjoyed The Force Awakens greatly but admit it is not beyond criticism and I have a few problems with it myself. But the author just goes off on a massive rant about why we should feel bad about watching a movie about a war whilst there are actual wars happening in the world. It's a terrible 'review' and has no place on RT.
DeleteIs it brave or stupid to leap from the top of a Skyscraper. Almost no one is doing it, it must be brave.
DeleteSome of her points are good about the military using movies for promotion.... but Star Wars was the wrong one to make that point. None of it was filmed with the US and they build all of the props themselves.
Delete that section and wait for the next Transformers movie to post it.
This is so not a good way to be an attention seeking whore.
ReplyDeletetee hee! An anti-war critique! That's cute (and silly).
ReplyDeleteAlso, I think hardly "impartial," but I'm sure you feel much better now and, of course, vastly superior to the hoi polloi.
This is a "review"? It's a social commentary/editorial that seems to have been written by a) someone who never even saw "Star Wars Episode VII", b) a complete Idiot, or c) Both.
ReplyDeleteSo basically you're saying "I hate star wars. I don't get why people watch star wars. It's popular so i don't like it. There's so much more important things in the world than a stupid star wars movie."
ReplyDeleteDid you even watch the movie? Cause this review sounds like you were on your phone throughout the most of the movie and simultaneously making annoying grunting sounds while trying to ruin the movie for others in the movie theater.
This is obviously not a review but a political commentary using little facts . Congratulations on getting yourself attention.
ReplyDeleteWhat an awful review. May I ask why you needed to clarify that John Boyega's character was black, but not that Daisy Ridley's was white?
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteUgh... Die
ReplyDeleteUgh... Die
ReplyDeleteYou only gave this a negative "review", and I use the term loosely, because you knew people would flock here from Rotten Tomatoes to give you traffic.
ReplyDeleteinside you, there lives an attention brat wanting blog visits
ReplyDeleteWhy the need to treat Star Wars fans as blathering idiots who bought into a national craze for endless war? It just seems too convenient for your argument, and insults many in the community who are bright, independent thinking people, that just enjoy the ride that is Star Wars. Yes, there will be war...This is Star WARS after all. Being critical of the fantasy violence is simply not fair. It would be like being critical of Titanic because in the end it sinks.
ReplyDeleteMovies need to be reviewed in their own context. Yes, you didn't like the movie. I can respect that. What I can not respect is the reasons given for not liking the movie. Such as "So what inevitably ensues is less of a focus on all the paradoxical cartoonish carnage and mayhem in progress on screen, than interest in what's up with the popcorn and Kool-Aid ingesting swooning audiences in the theaters." Sure, the movie is full of fan service. That's a valid criticism I can understand. I don't agree with it, but I understand it far better than personally attacking the fans of the movie. What really gets me is the feeling of venomous hate that comes across in the review. As if it's your right to spew such hateful garbage at the fans of the movie, but you just believe the responses will be "haters." I believe you read the comments here, because I've seen your responses to some of them, but the seething spite is just so passive aggressive for the sake of nothing. For someone who seems so anti-conflict, why bring it on? Is it the feeling of purpose, or just so people notice you? It's not your opinion that bothers so many of your readers, but the way you presented it while providing little in the way of evidence. I feel a little sorry for you, but for me I still have a childlike spirit in me that craves Star Wars. Does that mean I drank the "Kool-Aid?" Maybe, but at least I'm happier for it.
Wow, just wow. You know this is only a movie don't you? It's not real war, it's only fantasy.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteProof that not everyone needs to be heard.
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to be different I suppose! "Let me post a negative review"
ReplyDeleteThis reads some like amateurish review by a college freshman who just completed "political science 101"...
ReplyDelete^^^Applause to Michel for taking the high road instead of making a menses joke like the one lingering in most of our brains right now after having skimmed over this poorly-written political protest disguised as a "movie review".
DeleteAll of those Military props they used for this movie... I am sure the Army wants their Blasters back and the Air Force wants their X-Wings.
ReplyDeleteI like to read negative reviews for movies that get so much praise because I'm looking for a different perspective. Hopefully something smart that I hadn't thought about. Unfortunately reading yours was a complete waste of time. Did it ever occur to you that many Star Wars fans disagree with US polices and actions, and that seeing Star Wars is a momentary escape from perpetual helplessness? If you're going to write a movie review, review the movie. Not the people seeing it.
ReplyDeleteThis was a bad review on the grounds that any review that fails to review the film in question is a bad review.
ReplyDeleteYou didn't watch the movie. As an avid Star Wars fan I had obvious issues with the film and it deserves criticism as does all film, but your review isn't for the movie it's a soap box for your personal commentary on war in general. You're reviewing the title, not the movie.
ReplyDeleteSomebody was trying to get attention. Stupid bitch.
ReplyDeleteMixing political commentary with starwars is ballsy! Respect for that, and I think you make a revealing point about our obsession with war. Maybe we want to believe in a "good war" to help us ignore obvious U.S. war crimes and the tenuous line between terrorism and fighting terrorism.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes the merch is off the handle, no question.
But these ideas don't define the movie, and at least for me in star wars is a beautiful, fun, engaging story set in a completely exciting and awe inspiring universe. Laser swords and space ship battles!
I would agree with "ballsy", if there was any relevance (perhaps in the 1st 2 prequels, this could've provided the perfect opportunity to abuse "hashtag Star Wars" to garner hits/views, but not here). It shows how much a person feels a need for attention when they reach THIS far to equate ANYTHING in a space-western movie to real life. I have no respect for people who are too superior to let themselves actually have fun because of some warped elitist hipster principle.
You should not have reviewed this film, or possibly any film.
exactly right!
DeleteNarcissists should never review ANYTHING. And that's what the "reviewer" is.
DeleteHi. 48-yr-old male here. I have not seen the movie yet. But I just want to say I thought this review was well written.
ReplyDeletePublishing a bad review specifically for clicks and backlash is, dare I say, a path to journalistic dark side. Congrats, Bill O'Reilley of WB air.
ReplyDeleteThere are people who get paid like this to slam movies they probably haven't even seen and have no intention of fairly reviewing.
ReplyDeleteThe whole point of blogs like this is to misrepresent films for shock value and take a contrarian point of view.
This isn't journalism for films any more than IGN praise for video games that are bad is game journalism.
Unfortunately, I agree with the critic. It was a great movie for kids, but it missed the mark for me. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I left the feeling quite let down.
ReplyDeleteSome silly chick doesn't like Star Wars, oh well.
ReplyDeleteYou usw a populär Movie to tell You shitty thoughts to a broader mass of people. It's a shame, no it's disguisting that You made it on rotten tomatoes. Simply The consensus haters gonna hate implies that your rating has NOTHING to so with The actual Movie... The retardation is strong with you
ReplyDeleteThis is horrid writing, just horrid. With the entirely gratuitous and inept usage of 'boy toy' and the arrogant disdain towards readers (who are potentially viewers) through phrases such as "the popcorn and Kool-Aid ingesting swooning audiences in the theaters", the author is attempting to riff on Christopher Hitchens and announce to readers that She Is Clever. ReplyDeleteContrarian is my take; a writer who seems to think she's smarter than the rest of us.
ReplyDeleteIt's OK not to like Star Wars. It really is. But give me a reason. Was the plot too similar to the original film and Return of the Jedi? Did the dialogue suck? Was it a little too convenient that the film's heroes all wound up in the same place at the same time in a galaxy far, far away? Did "mastering" the Force come to easily to certain characters? Did the movie fail to answer basic questions?
It's fine that Stars Wars doesn't speak to you like it did to millions in my generation. Cool. The Force Awakens isn't a perfect movie. But it was fun, and rekindled the magic so many of us remember from our childhoods and are passing down to the next generation.
It's escapism. And I think you overthought this review.
Like many commenting, I can't actually tell if you saw the movie. Did you? To me it appears this might have been written ahead of time, to get an unrelated political doctrine out to the masses, riding Star Wars' and Rotten Tomatoes' enormous cosmic tails.
Then again, if Charles Rumshas is correct, this is par for the course with your reviews -- the more loved they are with other critics, the less likely you are to applaud.
To readers looking for critical thought, this isn't the reviewer you were looking for. You can go about your business.
If only the viewing public of planet earth had a high intellect such as yourself. Then again, I'm probably just mansplaining.
ReplyDeletewriting is better when you can understand it.
ReplyDeletewriting is better when you can understand it.
ReplyDeleteIt's OK not to like Star Wars. It's OK to take a contrary position to the majority of reviewers. It's even OK to say occasionally that beloved pop culture emperors have no clothes, even just for the sake of being provocative. Pauline Kael did that all the time. But Pauline Kael knew films, and she knew how to write. You, Ms Miller, are no Pauline Kael. Stop pretending to be.
ReplyDelete> Ahhh at least they didnt blow it up, Like certain death star has a tendency to. The special effects áre amazing and it feels very star warish. Also loved the natural environments, not that cgi generated garbage they used in the prequels. And best of all, no jar jar binks; It would have been a nice touch if this movie took a couple of minutes to explain the gruesome death he might had some time after episode iii, but that would be asking too much.
ReplyDelete>
> On the other hand, they had so much material and potential to make it much much better: Spoilers ahead:

> My main gripe is that they rendered all the effort the characters made in the original trilogy irrelevant: It took the force and the guide of obi wan for Luke to destroy the first death star. Here, a bunch of nobodies destroy a much bigger star like its nothing (by the way, how could they allow the same Design flaw three tomes is beyond comprehension.... The death star can consume the energy of real star, but they cannot be bothered to put some security devices at the doors, like alarms and cameras? . ). It took yoda training for Luke to first face off darth vader, and losing badly, while here, a girl with absolutely no experience and guide, learns to control the force and DEFEAT the emo-antagonist, without any formal training.
>
> Its very easy to critize once the work is done. Thats why mr abrams got to direct this movie while im here writing this nonsense and eating nachos and drinking beer...while my two sexy lingerie-wearing swedish roomates wait me in bed Of course; But lets keep em waiting a little bit more, because im a real fan.
>
> consider this: why didnt han or leía evolved? i mean, han is STILL the wise cracking bounty hunter we know. But he could have been anything, like the leader of a commercial interstellar conglomerate or something, that does cargo jobs for fun. But no, he still owes money to some random guys. I guess theres no social security in star wars either.
> Also, In episode III (actually vi, but i am going to pretend from here on that the prequels never existed, except for when yoda Fights palpatine and anakin turns bad and kills everyone including the padawans, which is totally incorrect but makes a very strong statement) luke tells leía that the force runs in the family, so you would expect that leía turned into a mystic princess-general that could actually use some force, instead, we see her as a schoolgirl that still got the hots for mr Solo, and although i dont blame her because he is still the coolest guy in the universe, i expected more from her. (How about instead of digitally erasing them, her wrinkles appeared due to the use Of the force? A la palpatine)
>
> And if you are the undisputed coolest guy in the universe, why not die like one? How about that they tried to destroy the new death star like in the previous movies, but instead of repeating the same old thing, they actually failed... "Hey, they finally solved the death star security problem!" and then someone comes up with and idea like "how about striking It with an object that travels at the speed of light"... From here on the possibilities are endless. I would go for the easy way and pull off an armaggedon, and have Han trap everyone in an escape pod including chewie... And then....
You know what? Here is the complete scene:
ReplyDelete>
> They come up with the idea to destroy the death star with a fast object, and the new crew is together with han in a mother ship. They walk together discussing, and without anyone noticing, han stops. You see the guys looking back at han. You see han looking at them, while he closes the door, locking them and keeping them from doing anything stupid. You see him saying goodbye to chewie, and thanking him for all his time and his friendship. You see him telling him the crew that they must Live.
>
> Then he cooly goes to the millenium falcon and sets everything up including the warpdrive... His last lines would be " at last. I am. Alone" (see what i did there with his last name?") While crashing the millenium falcon at superluminal speeed into the death star...
>
> Quite melodramátic. But if han solo is going to die, he deserves nothing but the most espectacular Of deaths, while saving the entire Galaxy in the process. Of course for all this to work, the fight between rei and renlo or whatever his name is, would have to be different, as in, never actually happening, and some other minor changes.
This would only enhace the importance Of Luke, because eventhough his part was good enough, it was like "ok girl, you found me. But it just happens you áre already a total badass, you are the second prettiest face in the star wars universe after amidala and CAN use the force and already beated the villian's ass... What CAN i possibly teach you?"
>
> Im already crying now. Not so much because of the quality of my material but because i have no idea what to do with this snoke dude
I checked out your previous reviews at this link. "http://www.rottentomatoes.com/critic/prairie-miller/" and wonder why out of all the obscure movies you've reviewed, why you would pick this one? Stay with your niche.
ReplyDeleteSome people feed of off negative backlash and it is good publicity to be the one green splotch in the sea of red tomatoes.
DeleteI noticed that too, which is why I posted in another comment how I'm glad hipster trash who make it a lifestyle to condescend anything which doesn't fit their community's "approval" only make up a tiny portion of the population. It was opportunism, and she SHOULD be ashamed at this obvious abuse of claiming this is ANY kind of "legitimate" review. Guessing she also has a similar feeling about her "taste" in music, denouncing popular, or classic artists in favor of horrid, forgettable performers with the hipster stamp of approval. I wish I were THAT "cool". lol

ReplyDeleteI dont get the US connection to Star Wars, but then Im not an arrogant American who thinks its all about them.
ReplyDeleteStar Wars is universal its not based on America so why compare the movie to what's wrong about America.

you are a stupid piece of shit pls remove this comment like how God removed your brain
ReplyDeleteI just saw the movie. I agree with most of the review. The movie appears to be a collage of ideas from other movies, in the mold of the 1978 movie. The movie was interesting and everything does goes boom-boom-boom day and night, but the fans need to cut back on the kool-aid.
ReplyDeleteyour a stupid ugly bitch. 95% of the critics love it. Maybe if you got laid more you might like it.
ReplyDeleteThe "review" is extremely poorly written. And bad. But your comment is worse. A lot worse.
DeleteIt's funny that the "reviewer" tossed out this hostile piece of rambling provocation probably expecting an equally raving counter-response from the frothing, Kool-Aid swilling simpleton zombie-fan base--and instead most of the rebuttals seem to be patient, sensible, measured, concise, and objective. Have I just missed all the "You don't like Star Wars? You're just like HITLER, only worse. God hates you," comments?
ReplyDeleteAh . . . the guy who wrote the "God removing your brain" comment posted two minutes before my "Where are all the 'God hates you' comments?" comment. Timing is everything.
ReplyDeleteMuch like Anakin, there's so much anger in this reviewer. She clearly can't review a movie without using it to advance her political views. She should not be reviewing films.
ReplyDeleteThis is the least focused, least informed, and most personally biased review of anything I have ever read! Your opinion shouldn't be allowed to reflect anything on rotten tomatoes. I hope you don't do this for a living. Not said out of star wars bias, but because you really didn't make a coherent point and you seemed more interested in critiquing the american psyche. Ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteThis is simply not a movie review. Ignore this if you are actually interested in the movie itself and not this attempt to make a political point or dazzle us with fancy prose. She also has a math problem. 2015 - 1776 = 239, not 235. Makes me wonder what came out 4 years ago that would actually make this rant make sense.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. This was an opportunity to get attention with "hashtag Star Wars" for stuff people normally would write off as narcissistic drivel.
DeleteExcellent review! I haven't seen the movie yet but I was worried when I saw JJ Abrahms was making this movie because of my strong dislike of "Star Trek: Into Darkness".
ReplyDeleteThere was no depth to the movie. With visuals that felt like an exploitation of 9/11 attacks, one dimensional female characters and special effects to the point where it was a distraction.
I am grateful for the Iconoclasm of this review. It should not be taboo to use our mythologies to make understandings of the world around us. That to me is a sign of cognitive dissonance and society on the brink of another major war.

I am going to put my reptilian brain that is a consumer whore in the driver seat when I see this movie so I can relate to the zeitgeist. I will not forget your critique and in all likely hood agree with it even more after seeing this film.
Excellent review of a film you have not yet seen. I think cognitive dissonance does apply.
Deletelol ^
DeleteYou are correct. I have not seen the film yet. I was basing my reply off of my reaction to another one of the film makers movies.
DeleteI sought out a dissenting view before watching the movie to help give me some perspective of what I am about to go see.
I found an intelligent review that resonates with my previous experience.
Her review also resonates with what I see happening to hollywood in a larger context.

The responses I have read to this article have mostly attacked the author rather than the substance of what she is saying.
If they mention what is in the article it never elaborates on as to why she is wrong.
That to me is an indication that the responses are very emotional. Which means she hit a nerve that resonated with people.
I wrote to fast in my first response. What I meant to emphasize is that I will most likely enjoy this movie. I want to. It will be easier for me to with the expectation of having to deal with the problems in the movie that this review articulated.

Being contrarian only works when one's sufficiently knowledgeable about the source material. You clearly lack the requisite understanding, and hence do not merit the wrath of anyone, especially not "haters". Who, BTW, would have to be characterised as equally lacking understanding, and maybe misery loves company... Hell, I dunno. Just guessing here. For the record, I gave TFA 7/10. I consider it a missed opportunity, a compelling story awkwardly told and bungled by bad editing from a dramaturgical and narrative perspective. Cannot rush a story like this. It loses its impact, which it did. So we're left with the pew-pew bang-bang (as someone else has put it). Too bad. Still, the potential is there for a superior Ep. VIII.
ReplyDeleteWhat a boring unoriginal and predictable read, author has a very pessimistic mad perspective on things. /feelforyou
ReplyDeleteWhat in God's name are you rambling about?
ReplyDeleteIs this a review for Star Wars, or some snarky complaints about US policy?
If you don't like Star Wars, fine. That's outstanding. But pretending to review the year's most anticipated movie so you can go off on some anti-war rant is just pathetic.
Seriously- So few people listen to your anti-war nonsense that you have to hijack a discussion on Star Wars? Think about how irrelevant you are when that's what you're stooping to.
Translation: "Look at me! Look at me!" This has all the hallmarks of a crazy Armond White review: condescending towards everyone who disagrees, finds some absurd political parallel that has nothing to do with the movie, throws big words at us without really knowing how to use them. Everyone keep in mind this woman gave a positive review to Adam Sandler's The Cobbler. She's not a critic, she's a "professional" troll desperately exposing her mental shortcomings for attention.
ReplyDeleteIt was opportunistic, and an abuse to use "hashtag Star Wars" as a way to garner hits/visits. Kind of sad and silly.
DeleteWow, you sound like you're just a bundle of joy to be around. I'd wager your facial muscles involved in smiling have atrophied into oblivion from prolonged disuse. If I were a physician, I'd prescribe something sweet, stat, to help wash some of the bitterness away.
ReplyDeleteThe author of this review claims to be judging the film solely on its own merit, then slams the movie based on unrelated political issues of her own passion. The review isn't playing by its own rules (Kudos on taking a brave stance, yet I don't know why it's brave).
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately she's right about the movie. This was a highly polished yet uninteresting story, amateurishly acted with obligatory casting and some gawdawful pandering. If Star Wars is a drug, we are taking it because of the addiction, not the thrill.
Thankfully the narcissistic hipster faction who already had made their minds up about the movie prior to even seeing it (like the author of this purported "review" evidently belongs to) only make up a fraction of a percentage of the population. Meanwhile, those of us who exist in reality and enjoy a fun story and have passion for things outside of anti-trending have spoken loud and clear in terms of turn-out AND positive reviews. This was an opportunistic swipe at "causes" and politics which were irrelevant to the movie. It was a way to name-drop "hashtag Star Wars" to get hits/visits and to polarize as an ego boost. It wasn't an honest movie review. It was a bait post. Thankfully, some fish know how to throw a hook and leave the fisherman--er---fisherPERSON---with nothing but a bare line and a little humility.
ReplyDeleteLighten up Frances. It's just a movie. WTF?
ReplyDeleteSo... Let's see: Thinly veiled poke at the director, check. Thinly veiled inferrence that the people watching the movie are uneducated, war loving louts, check. Not many comments on the actual movie: check. Obligatory comment that everything Disney does is make money (although obvious since they are a corporation), check.
ReplyDeleteActual critiques of the movie, marginal at best. Apart from having the TLDR of :
Boring plot, merchandizing cash cow of a movie with a fanbase addicted to war and big explosions.
Oh wait, I just resumed your entire brick into two lines. I'll just say this missus, a good critique knows how to make a proper synthesis.
-D.
This wasn't even a film review. Who the hell put this poorly worded writer on staff? I thought the movie sucked too but there are bad reviews and BAD REVIEWERS. This wasn't a review. You had one job.
ReplyDeleteAnd whoever hired you had one job too. To make sure you did yours. And they failed too.
ReplyDeleteBut she liked "The Cobbler"...hmmmm okay
ReplyDeleteWhat the hell did I just read?
ReplyDeleteFuck you, FAGGOT! I WILL KILL YOU. your a moran
ReplyDeleteare you sure you didn't watch episode 2 by accident? cause then this review would make sense...
ReplyDeleteThe stupid is strong with this one...
ReplyDeleteStar Wars is and was always political, intended or not. Every point you make is spot on and has its legitimate place in a film critique. Thank you for that clarity of mind! Even looking at 'VII' as pure entertainment, which is its intended main goal, it falls flat. Being the lowest common denominator of mediocrity is simply a wasteful loss considering the resources spent.
ReplyDeleteThere is of course the chance for the sequel to pick up the shards and plot holes and amaze us with original ideas, unexpected twists, developing characters, a story that transitions the old saga into the new age, a film that does the talking, not the characters explaining the film, thank you very much. The mystical Force hums and resonates through Jedi and Siths alike, revealing more of its true nature, only a little tease, showing some grey between light and dark.
Wanna bet?

ReplyDeleteI hear that his review is written by some one who does not know how to does not know how to write and do her job.
ReplyDeleteWell, her success in the blog sphere is based on how many views and comments she gets on her blogs.
So haters, you just gave this woman a raise.
Quite simply, its a rehash of episode IV. Nothing new and blah at times. The only newish things are Rey doing Jedi mind tricks and other Jedi things when she's had zero training, with the exception of closing her eyes and taking a deep breath, a boring light saber battle between her and Kylo Ren, Kylo having major temper tantrums and destroying machines when he doesn't get his way. Was basically a cash grab. Yeah people wanna see Star Wars, and they wanna see all the cool things in it, but why re-hash A New Hope? Story is essential and could have been way better.
ReplyDeleteWell, honestly - the fact that you are creating a critique with the sole purpose of drawing attention and 'haters' as you so put it, says all I need to know about your article. An attention grab. Look, I get it. Your not a fan. What gets me is your generation of reviewers - intentionally driving people to read an article or review with the singular purpose of drawing interest based off a skewed negative take on the film. You state the obvious, congratulations. If you want to say the movie was neither informative or original, and was a money or attention grab then congratulations - you have more in common with the movie than you think. Next time, write an article based on all of your own opinions, not just the ones you intend to draw 'hated' attention. It will sound a lot less like rubbish.
ReplyDelete"Okay, my two cents, there it is. And likely the fate that awaits this intrepid critic: Let the haters be with you. Bring it on."
ReplyDeleteOh fuck you, bitch!
"Okay, my two cents, there it is. And likely the fate that awaits this intrepid critic: Let the haters be with you. Bring it on."
ReplyDeleteOh fuck you, bitch!
Such a man, eh?
DeleteOh banksy....I'm hip!
ReplyDeleteAs long as we're going out of our way to start arguments, I might as well get in on the action: I have a penis, and I don't feel the least bit guilty about it.
ReplyDeleteLet the haters be with you. Bring it on.
*Gasps* How DARE you have something that you were born with! You should know better!
DeleteBRAVO! I refuse to see another damn Star Wars film. I prefer ART over commodities.
ReplyDeleteWant to see art? Go spend your hard earned money on "Trumbo".
It totally does. The article might as well be talking about a baked asparagus recipe and somehow accusing it of warmongering. Liberalism isn't bad, it's just that the invasive, pedantic, almost evangelical attitude that all art and entertainment is offensive to its cause is exhausting.
ReplyDeleteI give this article a 4/10. No focus on the subject at hand. Too much focus on perceived idiot droves, which don't apply to subject at hand. At least half of the article has to do with neither, tries to stand as political tract and fails from disconnectedness and lack of references. Total waste of time.
ReplyDeleteThis is the very best review I have read this year about any movie. Superb! Thank you so much:)
ReplyDeleteGreat review, although you don't go nearly far enough. I was one of those who lined up in 1977 to see the original and I have borne with the ups and downs of this franchise throughout. But this last outing was enough to break my heart. What unadulterated rubbish. What a travesty of all those dear memories. Thank you for saying what hundreds of reviewers are thinking but dare not say: the emperor has no clothes.
ReplyDeleteMain problem is not the author's obvious dislike for TFA. The problem is she totally fails to explain why. Like:
ReplyDelete1. No original story, entire plot borrowed from the original trilogy
2. Pretty much no character development at all. The good as well as the bad guys do some crazy stuff but you don't even know why. Finn for instance is supposed to be a stormtrooper from birth. Why would he suddenly defect despite all that brain washing?
3.Kylo Ren is a miscast or simplt badly
written. Once he puts off his mask, he is nothing more but an insecure, confused kid.
4. The plot is extremely implausible throughout. Like, how does some completely untrained person stand even a nuance of a chance against a seasoned dark side wielder? How can someone all of a sudden master the force without any training whatsoever by simply taking a deep breath?
How can someone spend unimaginable resources to build a planet sized weapon but totally fails to install even the most basic security measures, so that a small random team can easily undo its critical elements?
And so on and so on
100% agree. I am shocked that this terribly unimaginative flagrant retread of the original is getting the positive reviews it's getting. The first 1/3 is a boring "capture the flag" to-do involving a piece of a map is straight out of an old MGM Tom and Jerry cartoon. Oh no! "The resistance" (rolls eyes) blowed up ANOTHER death star! Quick! Build another! And try to make that area of vulnerability a little smaller this time! This film is --horrible--. Don't be afraid to say it. And here's the problem? The story was told after the first three, expertly so. 1977-1983. FIN. Sorry. Everything they do from here will be Godfather III-esque.
ReplyDeleteThis is not review. The "reviewer" should simply say I like movies that conform to my political beliefs and dislike those that don't. That would at least be honest.
ReplyDeleteThis is what's wrong with America, you can't just see a movie and enjoy it. Even if you aren't a Star Wars fan. You have to go and make it something more than what it is... A movie, for entertainment purposes. Get real, just watch the movie and stop being offended over something that's just there to entertain people.
ReplyDelete....yet she loved 2002's "Master of Disguise". That's all you need to know about this hack.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for that incisive review. I know it must be hard to go against the grain on this one; but, like you said, how many shallow reviews are produced out of fear rather than critical integrity?
