Set within the toxic underbelly of a pristine upscale retirement community somewhere in Middle America, Night Nurse and its typical surface low budget horror genre expectations set off shock and awe disturbances from the start. As one night nurse falls under the sexually seductive control of a clearly devious, brazen borderline diabolical old man, a most unlikely stud with a scheme to direct his prey into phone scamming other elderly male residents out of their money.
And though not explicitly summoning the scary persona of Epstein by young writer/director Georgia Berstein, the creepy context could not be more relevant. Presiding over the increasingly Stockholm Syndrome struck staff of youthful night nurses, is Breaking Bad's Bruce McKenzie. As he covertly whispers brutal mind control over these low wage submissive workers, an expanding cult drenched in premeditated seduction, booze, bondage, and potentially even murder.
And while the women are designated as night nurses, the absence of medically performed tasks would seem to indicate rather orderlies instead, a menial position more likely to subject them to manipulation and domination. While presiding over these secretive exploits within the institution, is Mimi Rogers as the frustrated but seemingly powerless Doctor Mann.
And as with production intent on more than just the usual derivative bells and whistles audience manipulation, Night Nurse would seem to have much more on its mind, however subconscious, traumatically driven it may be - and as a product of its historical moment in time. Not to mention a pervasive dread that every female experiences - fear of the predatory male.
Which would seem to bring these dramatic proceedings full circle into the real world - and the ever encroaching class divide in the country, presided over by an increasingly pervasive, surrounding sexually disturbed billionaire class. Namely, for instance, 'Epstein notoriously using 'night nurses' as a coercive and manipulative prop, routinely forcing women to dress up as "sexy nurses" on his private jet or at his residences to entertain and delight male guests like Trump...As with former model Cleo Glyde, who alleged that Epstein manipulated her into dressing like a "sexy nurse" to meet Trump, treating models as "trophies" and forcing her to wear the outfit to impress Trump...'
And, while 'utilizing a small, trusted circle of medical professionals, routine physical exams were conducted on the young women he trafficked, and obscured evidence of his crimes. Released Department of Justice records detail how these medical personnel operated with high secrecy to serve his inner circle...'
Which would lend evidence that Night Nurse has likely much more on its mind than a filmmaker in touch with an ever more divisive generation gap, though that as well - in a truth stranger than fiction subterranean forensic critique.
